Lead lists don’t work


That one hurt, didn’t it? I’m really sorry about that, but we need to just say the truth and be done with it.

Lead lists don’t really work in your wedding business. Not when you’re using old methods trying to stand out, trying to get brides’ attention, trying to get them to “see” you, trying to get them to schedule a consultation, trying to get them to buy, trying to push, push, push! 

Put yourself in brides’ shoes for a moment. How do you think it feels to receive dozens (and sometimes hundreds) of emails per week from wedding vendors desperately trying to book your business? What do you think it looks like when all the emails you receive say the same basic thing … Congratulations on your engagement! Blah, blah, blah, hire me, hire me, hire me, schedule your consultation today, blah, blah, blah…. 

Every time I talk about creating a lead-generating website and teach about marketing to brides, attracting them to you, about 90% of wedding pros immediately go to “well, I use lead lists and they don’t work!” And what I’m saying is … enough already with the lead lists!! Of course they don’t work!

You’re trying to stand out in a sea of people who look just like you. It’s kind of you’re the Waldo and brides are playing “where’s Waldo” but you forgot to wear your red and white striped shirt! 

Instead, what I’m desperately trying to get you to understand, embrace and implement in your business is to create your own lead lists. Stop only relying on advertisement-based lead lists, bridal show lists, and the like to feed your business. You can still use them (in a more effective manner), but don’t rely on these outlets to pay your check every week. Set your website up as a lead-generating machine. Set up your social media strategy not only build relationships, but to ALSO drive TONS of traffic to your lead-generating website. 

Envision your business like one gigantic funnel. Everything you’re doing in marketing is meant to pour brides into your funnel so that they all come through the same opening. That’s the kind of lead lists that work. 

In the next few days, I’ll start sharing with you how to transition now from basically screaming at brides to schedule a consultation with you/book your services TO inviting them to get a taste of what their wedding could be like. Sample your services. See your brilliance and expertise. Basically … you want them to fall in love with you and make selling easy, easy, easy!

I want you to stop for a moment and think about your potential brides out there as people. Not wearing their bride hat (or veil more specifically). Just who she is as a person.

Start connecting the dots about where she hangs out. Where you can find her in large numbers. What will work to stand out from all the other competition. 

Many of you are banging your head up against a wall because you’re desperately trying to advertise and  stand out from your competition. Yet you’re doing the EXACT SAME THING THEY ARE.

How can you possibly be seen when you have become an expert at blending in and following the pack?

So, right now I challenge you to step back from your own business. Think about where women with money go to shop. Who do they work with? Where do they buy? What do they read? Where do they hang out?

Brainstorm anything and everything that comes to mind right now without judgment.

This is where your new 2012 marketing journey begins.

Your Competition Doesn’t Matter When You Get This!


When it comes to your wedding business, you’re always trying to stay up to date with the latest trends.  But just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to too!  You only need to do the things that are right for YOU. That is how you are going to attract more brides. And it’s not just that. You have to embrace who you are as a person, instead of trying to be who everyone else is “being” out there!

There’s a little thing marketers like to talk about called your USP.  Your Unique Selling Proposition.  This is absolutely key when marketing to brides.  No one is in competition with you for being you, so be you and only you.  No one can compete with you then.  Use your own style, personality, your quirky nature and embrace it!  Being you is more important than most wedding professionals realize.  Brides don’t want some cookie cutter vendor, they want someone with a personality!  So think about it… what makes you different from the rest?  What do you do that no one else does?  What sets you apart? 

Competition IS a problem when you are only copying what “they” are doing. When you forget who you are, what makes you you, and only follow what everyone else is doing, competition will be your worst nightmare. 

Once you can go back to simply being you, all the competition will be gone!  Brides will start ringing the phone off the hook because they like your style, they like who you are.  It’s simply a matter of being comfortable and confident enough in yourself to just be yourself.  Once you have done this, business will boom!

When talking to your potential brides, make sure you’re letting them know “what’s in it for her.”  Don’t use “we” and “I”. Use “you” and “your”.  How can you help the bride?  How can you make a difference in her day?  How are you the answer to all her needs?  Explain to her how you can help solve her problems. 

Your Bride Attraction Assignment:

If you don’t know what’s special about you, do what my good friend Cari Vollmer (PassionIntoProfit.com) suggests. Ask 10 of your closest friends and family, plus 10 of your best clients what makes you “you”. What do they notice about you and your personality more than anything? What have clients enjoyed about working with you? What have you done for them?

You’ll find that some things are going to come up again and again and again. That’s what makes you different. Take these things and put them into your marketing as soon as possible… this will make all the difference in standing out from all those other people out there!

You’re Doing SEO, Whether You Know It Or Not

One of the most common complaints I hear from wedding pros when they first get in touch with me about their traffic situation is that they are doing all the things they’ve been told to do, like blogging and social media, but they aren’t getting any results from it. 

 

They can’t actually attribute any real inquiries or sales directly to these efforts, but they keep doing it because someone told them they should. When they begin to realize that every single wedding they’ve booked came from bridal shows or referrals….and not from their blog or social accounts…they start to wonder whether all this busy work is going to pay off.

 

If this sounds familiar, then the thing that you have to understand about traffic-building tactics like blogging and web 2.0 is that you are using them to create an SEO result, whether you realize it or not.

 

Every piece of content you put out there, whether it’s a blog article, video, social media post or webpage, is working for you…all the time…at every turn. Google sees it, Google indexes it and Google ranks it. Once you post it, it immediately starts producing a result for you.

 

– The only question is whether that result was produced intentionally or by accident. –

 

There are only 2 ways to do search engine optimization: on purpose or on accident. That’s it. Regardless of which one you choose…intentional or accidental…you’re still using SEO when you interact online.

 

You’re either following a well thought out plan that utilizes blogging and web 2.0, to get a specific, strategic search engine result…or you’re not. 

 

You either know exactly what you need to rank for, how much traffic it could bring you, how much competition you’re up against and how much effort is needed to move up the ranks…or you don’t.

 

You’re either blogging and using web 2.0 with a clear end in sight or you’re just blindly typing away hoping and praying that a bride will stumble on you by accident. 

One of these approaches wastes time, the other makes money.

You wouldn’t start your road trip to Omaha with your GPS set to Charlotte. Why would you waste your time trying to reach Google without a map that can actually get you there?

Connect with Brides on Emotional Levels to Sell



Brides want to know the facts of your business of course, as all, its important they understand exactly what your services are and whether or not they want it.  When it comes to promoting your company though, this isn’t the only thing you need to worry about.

I see a lot of success stories come in with clients telling me how they have really learned that stories are what help them truly connect with brides, not the facts.  I have decided to share some more ways to incorporate your stories into your business.  

Brides want to feel a connection with you.  Brides want someone they feel a connection with working on their wedding, if they aren’t feeling it, they wont buy.  Facts simply state the nuts and bolts of your business; no one can connect to that.  Clients want to know the softer side of you and your business, and the best way to share this is through stories.

Share the Story of You.  Tell brides why you’re in this industry and what it means to you.  Why are you passionate about your business and how you go to where are today.  What makes you YOU? It’s your stories that will make them choose you rather than another vendor.

Share the story of our business. Every business is built around the person who created it at the core.  Tell your brides how your story has influenced your business and how your business got started.  This may not seem very important, but I promise it is!

Share the story of your brides. This is why you need to make sure your testimonials are just simple “thank you’s”.  Give your brides a testimonial template to guide them and better tell their story about working with you.  New brides will related to past brides and this connection is what is going to make you sound more appealing.  

Once you have these stories, share them everywhere you can in your marketing materials.  On your blog, your websites, when you speak, at bridal shows, wherever you market yourself, make sure your stories are there too!  This is key to connect to potential brides and will truly give them that emotional bond they are looking for.

Branding is key in Business

Lately in my advertising management class we have been discussing branding and its importance quite a bit.  A lot of small businesses overlook the importance of branding themselves.  They design a logo and think that’s enough, but there’s more to it then that.  Your logo is simply a visual representation of your brand identity.  You want people to see your logo and feel something.  

 

Sit down and think about what your business is about.  What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes you different?  What is your businesses motto?  What describes your businesses personality?  These are all things that are going to help you brand your business.  Take the answers to these questions and turn them into one small, simple phrase.  Something short and sweet, something memorable and appealing to potential clients.  

 

Once you have done this start living your brand.  Where ever you go, be what you have decided you want your brand personality to be.  Whether it’s at a bridal show, a networking event, or a wedding you need to make sure you and the people working for your business are living that brand identity.  Put it on your marketing pieces. Make sure your employees understand what your brand identity is, what you stand for, what is important to your company.  

 

Over time, people will start seeing your logo and feel something.  Whatever you have branded yourself as, whether it’s being fun, helpful or creative, that idea will pop in their head when they see your logo.  That’s exactly what you want.  This will also connect brides with your marketing message to help bring you sales. Which is, after all, what this is all about. 

So get out there and start branding!
